La Donna Welter
When mixed-media artist La Donna Welter recalls her childhood, some of her fondest memories are of summers spent in Iowa at her Grandparent's farm. "Grandpa passed away years ago, but I’ll never forget the time I spent with him" La Donna says: "My work is really all because of him, and his hand-tinted portrait given to me as a child."
With teaching degrees from the University of Northern Iowa, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, La Donna approaches her work the old-fashioned way, painting her vintage photographs by hand, based on the original photo-oil technique. Though she usually transfers the vintage photograph first to canvas, the technique to capture the quality and romance of bygone tales, remains true.
La Donna has spent the past few years perfecting her technique of restoring vintage photographs or tintypes, photo-oil coloring using the finest quality transparent photo-oils, Photoshop, and graphic "antique frames." "The antique frame graphics combined with my photo-oil paintings allows me to add an additional layer of texture and romance to the pieces."
